East Poestenkill- Charles F. Gooley, 84, of North Road, Averill Park, died on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Community Hospice at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a long illness. Born in Green Island, Charles was the son of the late William and Mildred Slater Gooley and the beloved husband of 63 years to Lillian Catlin Gooley. Charles moved to East Poestenkill at the age of five and had resided there his entire life. He attended Troy High School and had served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1949, and was honorably discharged with a rank of staff sergeant. In 1950 Charles went to work at Al-Tech Steel Corp. where he was a mason. He retired in 1987. Charles was a beekeeper for 40 years and enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Charles was a member of the Community Church of Grafton, was a former member of the Poestenkill Fire Co., had been a volunteer at the Poestenkill Library and for 12 years was a member of the Tamarac Twirlers where he enjoyed square dancing. Charles was the brother of the late William Gooley Jr., Arron Gooley, Betty Greens, Ruth Walsh and Shirley Hussey. Survivors in addition to his wife include his children, Karen (Howard) LaVine of Ballston Lake, Wayne (Diane) Gooley of Beavercreek, Ohio, Daryl (Leona) Gooley of East Poestenkill and Diane Crandall of Hoosick Falls; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral service Saturday, January 18, 2014, 11 a.m. at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel, 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake, Averill Park. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral chapel on Friday 4 to 7 p.m. Interment Brookside Cemetery, Barbersville.
