Stephentown-Charles P. "Chip" Appel, 59, of South Road, Averill Park died on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at his residence after a long illness. Born in Albany, Chip was the son of the late Harry M. and Janice R. Langer Appel. Chip grew up in Albany and was a graduate of Albany High School. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College and the Police Academy. Chip had been the owner of Capital City Merchandising Co. in Albany and had run Chips Auto Sales from 1980 to the time of his death. His career in law enforcement led him to work for the Coxsackie, Nassau and the Chatham Police Departments. Chip had attended a number of schools and training to advance and enhance his police work. He had received numerous service awards for his work in law enforcement and had also lead the D.A.R.E. program in area schools. Chip had a large heart and love for animals and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Survivors include his sister and caregiver Sandy Appel of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his Aunt Rita Langer of Plainview, N.Y. and his canine and feline friends. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel on Friday 5-7 p.m. followed by a service at 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Wellwood Cemetery.
