David B. Cohen

d. May 26, 2015

Troy- David Byron Cohen, 72, of Diamond Rock Terrace Apartments died at his home surrounded by his extended family at the ARC on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 after a brief illness.  David was the son of the late Joseph E. and Elvira Coonradt Green Cohen.  He was born in Troy on February 10, 1943, at a time when many children with developmental disabilities such as his were institutionalized.  He, however, remained at home with his parents and spent his first 50 years under the devoted and loving eye of his mother.  In his early adult years, he attended Pinewoods Center and enjoyed bowling.  He was also a participant of the Day Hab program at Brunswick Center Services and worked for several years at Stewart’s in South Troy where he took a lot of pride in his job and looked forward to it weekly.  At the time of his death and for the last 22 years, Dave was a resident under the care of The ARC of Rensselaer County.  Most recently, he was living at an ARC residence at the Diamond Rock Terrace Apartments.  Previously, he lived in a group residential facility operated by the ARC in Lansingburgh.  While living there he attended St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Lansingburgh and enjoyed participating in bible study.  Dave was a gentle, easy-going guy with a good sense of humor who always appreciated all that was done for him.  He made it easy for those who cared for him to give him their very best.  He was loved and cared for by the ARC staff for which his family is most grateful. Dave liked to watch/listen to old time radio and TV shows, especially Howdy Doody and The Lone Ranger, and he loved Bob Hope, Gene Autry, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.  He enjoyed horseback riding, rodeos and history, especially anything to do with the presidents or the Civil War and he liked to visit historical sites.  He would frequent the Brunswick Historical Society with his friend Heather and enjoyed their outings to the Book Barn in Latham.  Watching Jeopardy was a favorite pastime and he would amaze us with the many answers he knew.  In his last few years, he especially enjoyed his big coffee table books and even as his eye sight started to go he still enjoyed holding his books and flipping through the pages and, in the last few months, one of his many bibles would always be by his side. Dave was predeceased by his sisters, Lucy Herman and Naomi Esposito.  Survivors include his brother John L. Green of Watervliet and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is also survived by his extended family at The ARC of Rensselaer County, including his housemate Carlton, Alice B., Alice W., Lillian, Margaret, William and Dwight, and a host of devoted caregivers.
Funeral service Friday, May 29 at 12 noon at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel, 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake, Averill Park.  Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral chapel from 11:00 am – 12 noon, prior to the service.  Interment will be at  Woodside Cemetery, Poestenkill. The family would like to thank Dave’s extended family at the ARC who have been so wonderful and devoted to him these last twenty years and to his doctors and the nurses at St. Peter’s Hospital who have always been especially good to him. If desired, donations in memory of Dave may be made to the ARC of Rensselaer County, 79 102nd St., Troy, NY 12180 or to The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Boulevard, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
