Newtonville- Edwina “Winki” Walsh beloved wife, sister, aunt, friend passed peacefully on December 11, 2015.
Born in Yonkers, NY, daughter of the late Francis and Estelle Walsh, Edwina lived most of her life in New York and California. She graduated from the Fordam University and earned her masters from the College of St. Rose. Many children were blessed to be taught by Edwina. She taught elementary education, high school English, special education and technology. Edwina was a Sister of the Resurrection in the New York province for fifteen years.
Winki was insightful and creative. She was an astute researcher and a powerful writer. Her stories portrayed the energy and love of life. In her book, SCHOOL MARMS, Edwina connects the fight for women’s liberation and educational reform.
Biking and hiking throughout California with her dear Ken filled Winki’s life with joy. She loved to share those stories and memories.
Winki was the beloved wife of Kenneth Gatton of Latham; cherished sister of Agnes (John) Marona of Millbrook, Cdr. USN Ret. Ronald Walsh of Sag Harbor, Patricia Walsh of Sand Lake, Dianne (Michael) Walshhampton of Rensselaer, Kathleen (Howard) Weinberg of Virginia Beach; dearly loved aunt of several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Winki was predeceased by her sisters Alexandria (George) Peet of Sand Lake, Joane Walsh of California, Delores (Ralph) Merone of Poughquaq and by her brother Paul Walsh of Sand Lake.
Winki’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital, Sunnyview Hospital and Ellis Hospital for the compassionate and professional care given to Winki.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at St. Henry’s Church 39 Old Rte. 66Averill Park on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 9:30- 10:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.
Due to the Advent season and the limitations of flowers in church the family has requested donations in memory of Edwina Walsh be made to the Maintenance Fund of St. Henry’s Church PO Box 550 Averill Park, NY 12018.
