Averill Park- Adelard F. Hanley, 90, of Eastern Union Turnpike died on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. Born and raised in Whitehall, NY, Adelard was the son of the late William C. and Lillian M. Charpentier Hanley and husband of 36 years to the love of his life the late Lucille M. LeClaire Hanley. During WW II Adelard served in the Army in the 16th Postal Regiment Section, Third Army Headquarters in the Army of Occupation stationed in Florsheim, Furth and Nurnberg, Germany. After his tour of duty in the Army Adelard continued his education and graduated from Siena College in Loudonville and Oneonta State Teachers College. In 1949 Adelard began his career with the Troy City School District. He had taught at Schools 16, 17 and 18 and at the age of 28 became the Principal of School 2. He also served as Principal at Schools 1, 18 and his beloved School 12 in South Troy. During the early 1970’s he served as Assistant Principal at Troy High and retired in 1985. Adelard was an avid reader of History particularly World War II and the John F. Kennedy Assassination, of which he was an expert. He loved Notre Dame football, big band music and always honored family tradition. Adelard loved the time spent with his family and the time spent telling and retelling family history and stories. Adelard will be remembered as a kind and gentle man.
Adelard was the father of the late Kevin J. and Andrew J. Hanley and brother of the late William J.(Elizabeth) Hanley and Mary Ellen Valenty.
Survivors include his son William C. Hanley II, daughters Adele (William) Hayes and Claire Hanley, his devoted grandchildren Michele (Brett) Clapham, Nicole (Todd) Markelz, Lindsay (Brad) Noll, Derek Hanley, Stephanie Hayes and his great grandchildren Danielle Clapham, Evan Markelz, Carter Clapham, Oliver Markelz, Alex, Lucille and Bennett Noll, along with many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his canine companion Bisquit.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Eddy Heritage House and the Albany Medical Center for the care given to Adelard.
Funeral Saturday, February 13, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at St. Henry’s Church 39 Old Rte. 66 Averill Park, NY where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Perry – Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park on Friday 4-7 p.m.
Spring Interment in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery Whitehall, NY
