Poestenkill- Alfred Martin Toniatti, 91, was called home to God on Friday April 11, 2014 at the Hospice Care Unit at the Stratton Veterans Medical Center in Albany. Born and raised in No. Adams, MA. Alfred was the son of the late Martin and Eva Gilbert Toniatti. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed aboard his beautiful battleship (as he called it), the USS Washington during World War II. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.
In 1947 he moved to Troy with his young family. He worked as a Forman in the needling department for the Albany Felt Company in Menands. In 1974 he was transferred to the Globe Albany Corporation in Tempe, AZ. In 1984 he retired and returned home with his wife to Poestenkill. Alfred was a lover of beautiful music all of his life. He loved everything from the Big Band Era to Broadway musicals and operettas. He would listen for hours to music written by Chopin, and Puccini, beloved Italian music sung by such artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and many, many others. He was a former member of the Poestenkill Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of the Sullivan- Jones VFW Post.
Alfred leaves behind his loving and caring wife of 67 years, Leona Paquette Toniatti, his children Pamela (Ted) Craver of Clifton Park, Donald (Lila) Toniatti of Poestenkill and Carol Gibbs of Wynantskill.
He was predeceased by his beautiful granddaughter, Amanda Gibbs and is survived by 8 wonderful grandchildren: Michael, William, Richard and Daniel Craver, Ronald and Brian Toniatti, Tricia Gibbs, and Jamie Ormsby. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of 7B Wing and the Hospice staff of 9B of the Veterans Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Phillips and Dr. Uppal. You are truly the unsung hero’s providing care and compassion to our veterans and consolation for their families. God Bless you all! Funeral Tuesday 9:30 a.m. at St, Jude the Apostle Church Brookside Ave. Wynantskill where a Mass of Christan Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park on Monday 4-7 p.m.
