Poestenkill- Edward J. Hoffman, 89, of Snake Hill Road died on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Eddy Heritage House in Troy after a long illness. Born and raised in Chappaqua, NY, Ed was the only child of Edward J. and Katherine Mullaney Hoffman Sr. and he was the husband of Janet Hoffay Hoffman. Ed served in the Army Air Force from 1943- 1948. Ed was a co pilot on B 17’s and A25’s and flew 41 missions during the European Theatre. After being discharged from the service Ed attended college at Springfield College where he received a Bachelors in Science Degree in 1953. Ed moved to Troy where he coached for RPI. He was a wrestling coach, assistant Lacrosse coach, working under Ned Harkness from 1957-58 and was head football coach from 1958-1962. While working in Troy Ed and Janet met and where married. They moved to Yorktowne Heights NY and Ed was the Athletic Director/ Coach/ Phys Ed Teacher at the Briarcliif Manor High School until 1988 when he retired. In 1989 Ed and Janet built their house on Snake Hill Road and moved back to the area. During his summer vacations Ed would work with his late brother in law in the masonry business. Ed enjoyed his retirement Golfing and fishing. He was a member of the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill and was an “honorary member” of Bill Brods. Ed was the brother in law of the late Gene Hoffay and Evelyn H. Kenney.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Michael S. (Laura) Hoffman of Troy, his sister in law Doris Hoffay of Poestenkill, his nieces and nephews Robert (Louise) Barbour, Timothy (Paula) Hoffay, Jay (MaryAnn) Hoffay, Mark (Linda) Gunther and Suzanne (Bill) Baker along with several grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to Ed’s funeral on Monday 10 a.m. at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park. There will be no public calling hours. Interment Brookside Cemetery, Barbersville.
