Castleton - Daniel L. Shoemaker, 75, of Arno Drive, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at the Rosewood Gardens Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a time of declining health. Born in Troy, Dan was the son of the late Harry G. and Luella Gundrum Shoemaker and the beloved husband of Cheryl Stinger Shoemaker. Dan grew up in Averill Park (Sand Lake) and was a 1968 graduate of Averill Park High School. He was a graduate of HVCC. Dan entered the Navy in August 1970 and due to an injury was honorably discharged in May of 1971. Dan had a career with NYS DOT in Albany where at the time of his retirement he was an Engineering Technician. For a number of years Dan and Cheryl enjoyed wintering in Florida. Dan enjoyed RV camping, baseball and the Boston Red Sox.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Corey (Lynda) Shoemaker of Guilderland and ever faithful companion German Shepard Grace.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call 10-11am on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake, Averill Park followed by a short service and Inurnment with honors at the Saratoga National Cemetery.
Since Dan and Cheryl were both welcoming friends and neighbors to a local business, please consider making a donation in memory of Dan to: Moose Lodge Senior Pet Sanctuary, a 501c3 that operates right in their neighborhood. The sanctuary is a non-profit where abandoned senior dogs from all over the country come to live out their final years. These are senior dogs who have lost their families for one reason or another -- usually because the guardian family human passed away, and no one wants to care for an old, often sick dog. Sometimes they are abandoned, dumped in a parking lot, or tied to a tree. They are taken to a local shelter, then to a rescue group and, if they are lucky, they end up at Moose Lodge, where they are again one whole family. They live in the house with Co-Founders Dave Jacobs and Debbie White as one big family. Moose Lodge is supported by Dave and Deb’s Social Security and various donations from all over.
To donate visit online www.mooselodgesps.org and click DONATE button at the top of the page. On the second page, after you enter the amount to donate, continue down to type in honoree (Dan Shoemaker). Since Moose Lodge is a 501c3 you will receive a donation letter at the end of the calendar year to use for your income taxes. FYI: on the summary page under the chosen amount you’ll see “processing fee”. Since neither Cheryl nor Moose Lodge want you to pay extra for your donation, simply click “edit” which deselects the fee charges. It shows “Done.” Continue with the transaction and ensure either/or both email and street address are provided.
