Poestenkill-David Nathan Hass, 68, of Poestenkill, NY died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, July 12, 2026. David was born October 3rd 1957 in Norfolk, VA during his father William's Navy service. David's family relocated to Tenafly, NJ shortly after, where David graduated high school and played on the school's 1975 NJ state champion soccer team. After receiving a bachelor's degree in political science from New York University in 1980, Dave hitchhiked to Wyoming to work on a cattle ranch for a summer, where he discovered his true passion of working with machines. In 1986, he graduated with a second bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in mechanical engineering, where he met his wife, Martha. Later that year, he started his business, Hass Manufacturing Company, in Troy, NY, eventually moving the business to Poestenkill, NY in 2006, where it continues to operate.
In addition to being an inventor and a proud American business owner, David was passionate about making a difference in his own community. He was elected to Poestenkill Town Board in 2007 and was re-elected five times, holding the office until his passing. He was an active member of the Poestenkill Business Association, serving as treasurer for many years. David also founded the Poestenkill Baking Company, which was a celebrated local fixture, where he famously sold his signature artisan breads directly to the community through the Poestenkill Farmers Market, which he helped to establish. He was an endlessly curious man, constantly reading and learning about new things, and never hesitated to explain something interesting that he recently discovered. He shared his love of music, fishing and photography with his three sons. A true embodiment of the American dream, David devoted his life to his wife and children, builthis business from the ground up and faced every challenge with unwavering optimism.
David was predeceased by his parents, William and Barabara Hass of Tenafly NJ. He was a loving and devoted husband to Martha (Welch) Hass for 39 years and father to Max (Danette and son Vernon), Lucas (Meaghan), and Alex. He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Gollance(Phil) and Wendy Gottlieb (Seymour) and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Calling hours will be held from 11am-1pm, followed by a memorial service at 1pm on Saturday, July 18, 2026 to celebrate David’s life. For location details, email memorialfordavid26@gmail.com.
