Denise Widmer

d. June 16, 2022

Denise Widmer of Winter Haven, Fla., previously of Troy, NY passed away in Albany, NY on June 16, 2022.  Denise was predeceased by her husband of nearly 65 years, Kurt, two sisters and one brother.  She is survived by son, Roland Widmer, daughters Marilyn Widmer and Heidi (David) Yetto, grandchildren, Christopher (Danielle) Widmer, Allison Ogden, Justin Yetto, and Katelynn Meppen, seven great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews whom reside in Switzerland, Australia, and France.  Denise was born on March 22, 1935 in Meyriez, Switzerland to Friedric and Marguerite Burla.  She grew up in Switzerland and excelled athletically, particularly fond of basketball.  Denise was a strong and determined woman, spoke four languages, and at the age of 18, moved to England and was employed by a family as a nanny.  After returning to her homeland of Switzerland she met Kurt, and they were married in January 1957 and worked together in a local butcher shop in Berne.  They and son, Roland, immigrated to the United States in 1959 and soon Marilyn and Heidi were born.  Kurt and Denise purchased Helmbold’s in Troy in 1968, and together worked each applying their skills and talents to fulfill their American dream.  As a young, working mother Denise was active as a cub scout den mother and participated in the many shows by moms benefiting LaSalle School in Troy.  She loved gardening and was expert at it, enjoyed all of nature, tennis, and bowling with her friend Terry.  Denise grew up learning to sew and knit, and was especially skillful at that as well.  Grandchildren were always dressed in beautifully knitted outfits; and many customers of Helmbold’s will recall she knit for their families also, doing so as she worked in the store.  She enjoyed traveling, swimming, boating, and entertaining with Kurt at their summer and winter homes.  Denise loved to shop and always looked her best and beautiful, and realized great pleasure when Kurt took her for a drive in her cherry red Lincoln.
