Averill Park-Dorothy Christina “Cris” Blanchard, Ph.D., passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2025, after a lingering illness. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Edward B. Blanchard, Ph.D., and her stepson, John E. Blanchard of New York City. Also surviving are her sister, Elizabeth “Bess”Chosak of Walnut Creek, CA; niece Abigail Adams and her children, also of Walnut Creek; and nephew Caleb Bailey and his family of Maryland.

Cris was born on February 9, 1941, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Dr. Arthur Ferguson and Elsie Grueber Ferguson. She was predeceased by her first husband, Wayne Gregg and a brother-in-law Michael Chosak.

Cris earned a B.A. from Valparaiso University, an M.A. from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in sociology from Purdue University. Later, she received her MSSW from the University of Tennessee, becoming a certified social worker and psychotherapist. A pioneer in medical research and education, she was among the first to teach behavioral sciences in medical schools, with a focus on doctor-patient communication. As a psychotherapist, Cris facilitated therapy groups for cancer patients and their families and offered compassionate support during difficult times.

Her distinguished career included, among other accomplishments, a professorship in Medicine and Psychiatry at Albany Medical College, a term on the National Board of Medical Examiners, and active involvement in the National Association of Oncology Social Work. Additionally, Cris was a New York State Division President for the American Cancer Society and a National Assembly delegate. Her South Side High School in Fort Wayne, IN. named her a Distinguished Alumna. Cris also served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Albany, NY and for a time was an active member of the Church of the Covenant of Averill Park, NY.

Cris was a lifelong reader and belonged to several book clubs. She and Ed enjoyed the close-knit community of Averill Park, participating in gatherings, breakfasts, and ping pong. One of her greatest joys was kayaking on Crystal Lake. Their travels included visits to all 50 states. In retirement, she continued her commitment to education and community by serving as a trustee of the Town of Sand Lake Library and as a board member of the Upper Hudson Library System.

Most recently, Cris and Ed lived at the Massry Residence atDaughters of Sarah Community in Albany, N Y. Her family is most grateful for the compassionate care she received there,augmented by The Community Hospice and Touching Hearts at Home.

A memorial celebration for Cris will be held on October 4th, at 3:00, at the Perry Komdat Funeral Chapel, 2691 NY Highway 43, in Averill Park, NY 12018. A reception at LaPerla Restaurant in Averill Park will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity or church of your choice or to the Town of Sand Lake Library, 8428 Miller Hill Road, Averill Park, NY 12018.
