Eugene A. Teal

d. April 1, 2022

Sebastian, FL.- Eugene A. Teal, of Mango Ave. and a lifelong resident of Oak Hill Road in Sand Lake, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022, at the age of 84. After a hard-fought battle, Gene died peacefully with loved ones by his side at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, FL.
Gene was born in Troy on September 29, 1937 and was the devoted son to Edward A. Teal and Margaret Budesheim Teal. He was the loving husband of Joyce A. Catlin Teal for 66 years with whom he shared four children.  Gene grew up on his family’s farm where he helped from an early age and was educated in the Averill Park Schools. His dedication to providing for his family led him to begin his working career with Clifford Catlin before starting his own plumbing businesses including Gene’s Septic Service. Gene finally found his home and his calling when he began to work at Anderson and McElligott Mechanical Contractors in Troy, where he built lifelong friendships and retired after 30 years.
Gene and Joyce spent several winters in Florida before becoming full time residents 22 years ago. They would spend summers in Sand Lake, always referred to as “Home,” where they created cherished memories with their family and doted on their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gene was a lifelong and active member of the Zion’s UCC in Taborton where he often lent a helping hand. He will be remembered as the lively and endearing “auctioneer” at the annual church summer picnic, where he spent many summers helping raise money and providing laughter. Gene served in the NY National Guard in the late 1950’s and 60’s.  He was a founding member of the Black River Raiders Snowmobile Club and at one time enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle with many friends.
Gene could often be found outdoors. If he wasn’t outside puttering around in his garden or mowing his lawn, he was working on different projects to help a friend in need. His kindness and generosity were his most admirable qualities as he spent most of his life thinking about and serving others. Gene welcomed all who would stop by for a visit with open arms that often held a drink to share. He was a man of country music and enjoyed laughing, singing, and dancing with his family. Gene prioritized his family above everything else in his life. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and would brag about them to anyone who would listen. He will be greatly missed by those around him, especially by his close relatives.
Survivors in addition to Joyce include his devoted children Robin (Mark) O’Brien, Jami (Charles) Wachtel, LoriAnn (James) Shelgren and Darin (Angela) Teal, 9 loved grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Gene was the brother of the late Irene Myrick.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 10-11 am on Saturday, June 11 at the Zion’s United Church of Christ,  741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, NY followed by a service at 11 am.
