Poestenkill- Florence M. “Toady” Smeland, 103, a longtime resident of Poestenkill passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at the Van Rensselaer Manor after a time of declining health. Born in Stephentown, Toady was the last surviving child of six to the late Archie and Carrie Miller Goyer and was wife of the late Henry “Hank” Smeland. Toady was raised and educated in Grafton and went to work at the age of 14 as a nanny and cook in Troy. She had resided in Poestenkill for over 70 years and had resided at the Manor since September of 2018. Toady worked at the former Montgomery Wards in Menands where she was an Assistant Merchandiser and after that she was a cashier at the former Millers Market in West Sand Lake and retired from there in 1980. Toady was an original Charter member of the Sullivan - Jones VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary in Poestenkill and was a past president. She was a member of the Poestenkill Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, the Poestenkill Seniors and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poestenkill. Toady was proud to be the only women in the Mark 20 Sportsman Club.
Toady was the mother of Rebecca Nichols Lobdell of Poestenkill, grandmother of Kevin (Stephanie) Nichols, Kim (Tim) Murdick, Kurt (Jenifer) Nichols and the late Kristopher (Shelly) Nichols. Toady was the great grandmother to 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake, Averill Park.
Relatives and friends are invited and may also call 4-7 pm. on Thursday, June 10 at the Funeral Chapel.
Interment in Brookside Cemetery, Barberville.
