Averill Park- Francis Neil Rafter, 81, a longtime resident of Arlene Court died Wednesday morning September 12, 2018 at the Samaritan Hospital due to a long-term illness. Born and raised in Troy, “Neil” was the son of the late John C. Rafter Jr. Esq. and Jane Brower Rafter, stepson of the late Catherine Tracy Rafter and husband of the late Elizabeth Gabriels Rafter. Neil served in the Army before beginning his career with the NYS Dept. of Transportation where worked as a Soils Engineer. He had retired in the late 1990’s due to illness. Neil had resided in Averill Park for over 60 years where he was a communicant of St. Henry’s Church. Neil enjoyed music and moonlighted as a drummer with the Gary Johnson Trio and other area groups. Neil also was an avid games man and enjoyed both fishing and Bow Hunting.
Survivors include his children Elizabeth (Eric) Heier of Averill Park, Neil J.J. Rafter of Schenectady, Francis F.R. (Kerry McGrath) Rafter of Orlando, FL., and Patrick G. (Christine) Rafter of Windham, NH, his brother Richard Rafter of GA, sister Margaret Daley of Wynantskill, his grandchildren Joshua, Emily, Abby, Jacob, Scotland, Brooke and Isabella. Neil was the brother of the late Joseph H. Rafter, John C. Rafter III and Sally Christiansen.
Francis Neil’s family wishes to thank all of the care givers and the staff at the Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing at Hoosick Falls for the care given to Neil over the past several years.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday 9-10:30 a.m.at St. Henry’s Church 39 Old Rte. 66 Averill Park followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30.
Burial will follow at St. Henry’s Cemetery.
