Sand Lake- Gene A. VanValkenburgh II, 59, of Momrow Road died on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at his residence with his family and friends at his side. Gene was born in Albany, the son of the late Gene A. and Dorothy M. Hoffman VanValkenburgh and the devoted husband for over 30 years to Diane Brown VanValkenburgh. Gene grew up in East Schodack and was a graduate of Columbia High School and resided in Sand Lake for the past 30 years. Gene had worked for the Pepsi Corp. in Latham for the past 26 years and was a ForkLift Operator. Gene was very active in the fire service in both East Schodack and Taborton. He joined the East Schodack Fire Co. at the age of 16 and was a life member. After moving to Sand Lake he joined the Taborton Fire Co. and became a Life Member. Gene held various firematic offices in the company and most recently was the Assistant Chief. He had held the office of Treasurer for the company for many years. Gene was proud of his membership at Taborton, he was a pioneer that started the monthly pizza nights, for over twenty five years ran the annual calender drive and his most recent accomplishment was the Committee Leader for the purchase of the companies new fire truck. Gene was able to enjoy the delivery and be able to drive the new piece of equipment.
Gene was a member of the Zion’s United Church of Christ in Taborton, he enjoyed Lebanon Valley Stock car racing, Drag racing, collecting MatchBox cars, and mowing his lawn on his John Deere Tractor.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his beloved son Gene A. VanValkenburgh III of Sand Lake, his brothers Wayne (Jackie) VanValkenburgh of Amsterdam and Gary (Debbie) VanValkenburgh of East Schodack, his sisters Nancy (David) Metter of Castleton, Linda (Richard) Dunbeck of Albany and Robin (Keith) Taylor of Wynantskill along with several nieces and nephews.
Gene’s family wishes to thank the staff at the NYOH Troy office, the Community Hospice ,the ICU and 5th floor staff at St. Peters Hospital and Rev. Trygve Tomlinson for the care given to Gene and his family during his illness.
Funeral Service with Fire Company honors 10 a.m. Thursday, January 19 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park.
Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral chapel on Wednesday, January 18, 4-7 p.m.
Interment Taborton Cemetery
