Berlin- James A. Saunders, 65, of Old State Rte. 22 passed away on Saturday morning November 13, 2021 at his home with his wife Carol and his niece Laura at his side. Born in Troy, Jim was the son of the late Murry R. “Zip” and Edna Weaver Saunders and the husband of 42 years to Carol Walters Saunders. Jim was a lifelong resident of Berlin, and a 1975 graduate of Berlin High School. Jimmy’s working career was spent at the Berlin School District where he worked in the Maintenance Dept. He had retired 2011 but had been a substitute bus driver after retirement. Jim was a jack of all trades, had helped working on his brothers farm and had served for a term on the Berlin Town Board serving as a councilman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening especially potatoes and for a number of years after retirement enjoyed spending winter months in Florida. Jimmy was a member of the NRA and the Mountain Chapel Church and had served as a trustee. Jim was known to take his chances and bet on the horses.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a step daughter Theresa (Robert) Bonesteel of West Columbia, SC, his grandchildren Jessica Johnson, Chad and Tim Bonesteel along with 7 great grandchildren, his brothers and sisters Joyce Ogert, Murry (Virginia) Saunders Jr., Charles (Beulah), Scott (Brenda), Peggy, Debbie, and Daniel Saunders Ethel (Pat) Avery, Carol (William) Purdy and Edger Saunders and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was the brother of the late Nancy Saunders Mroz.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Graveside Service 1 pm Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Berlin Community Cemetery Rte. 22 Berlin followed by a get together to celebrate Jim’s life at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Hall.
The family request donations in memory of James A. Saunders be made to the Berlin Food Pantry PO Box 225 Berlin, NY 12022.
