North Greenbush- Joan A. Cooke, 87, of the Van Rensselaer Manor and a longtime resident of West Sand Lake, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at her residence after a long illness. Born in Albany, Joan was the daughter of the late Carl J. and Alice Pierce Alger and was the devoted wife of the late Ronald J. Cooke until his passing in 2014.
Joan grew up in Schenectady and was a 1956 graduate of Vincentian Institute. She and Ronald were married in September of 1956 and moved to Connecticut for a short time moving back to the area in 1958. They resided on Delaware Ave. in Albany, then in Troy before moving to West Sand Lake in 1973. She had also resided in Sand Lake and Schodack and then again in Sand Lake before residing at the Manor. Joan was retired from the NYS DMV where she was an Administrative Assistant to the Commissioner. Joan enjoyed traveling, RVing and camping, was a Classie Lassie Secretary and a communicant of St. Henrys Church in Averill Park. A sweet and generous person, Joan enjoyed time with her family and lunch with friends.Survivors include her children William E. (Marion Wolfe) Cooke of Sand Lake, Colleen T.(Tom Bonesteel) Caulfield of Ormond Beach, Fla, Timothy J. (Kim Haberland) Cooke Sr. of Eagle Bridge, Christopher J. Cooke Sr. of Mechanicville, Linda C. Cooke of West Sand Lake and Dierdre A. Cooke of Raymertown, her sisters Mary (Robert) Bailey of Schenectady and Patricia Oddy of Castleton 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren along with nieces and nephews.
Joan was the sister of the late Cecilia Taber.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call 4-7 pm on Friday February 20, 2026 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11 am on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at St. Henrys Church 39 Old Rte. 66 Averill Park, NY.
