North Greenbush-John B. Aptt, Sr., 93, husband of the late Barbara (Oakes), passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2025 peacefully at Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. John and Barbara had shared 68 years of marriage.
John was born in Gloucester, MA on August 21, 1931, son of the late Howard and Louise (Amaral), Aptt. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, all from Gloucester, MA.
John served in the Navy during the Korean War as a Storekeeper and Cook from 1952 to 1956. When he returnedhome, he relocated with his wife and two daughters to begina new life in East Greenbush, NY. He started a new job at Hamilton Printing Company, as a Linotype Operator, where he was employed until he retired.
After several years in East Greenbush, John, his wife, two daughters and two sons moved to Nassau. He was a volunteer fireman with the East Schodack Fire Company from 1968 to 1984. John loved sports so much, that he became a coach for the Little League baseball in Nassau. In his spare time he golfed, bowled, played billiards, shot darts at the East Greenbush VFW, and watched his sports on the weekend.
Once retired, John enjoyed cooking on the grill and being poolside with his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. During the winter months, he enjoyed making his famous fried dough for all of us. On Sundays, after church, he would make sure there were donuts and cinnamon buns for everyone. He loved having his family around him as much as we loved being with him.
He is survived by his children Linda Dawes of Sand Lake, Deborah (Michael) Stockman of East Schodack, John B. (Robin) Aptt, Jr. of Nassau and Mark Aptt of East Nassau; his grandchildren Becky Dawes, Jennifer Aptt, Lindsay (Michael) Goebel; Elizabeth (Scott) Bouchey; and his great grandchildren Geoffrey Dawes and Rylee Aptt.
