Laurence B. "Larry" Malone

d. October 16, 2022

Newton,MA-Laurence B. (Larry) Malone, a resident of Averill Park, NY for more than 50 years, passed away on October 16, 2022 at The Falls at Cordingly Dam in Newton, MA. Larry was born on December 20, 1927 in Lansingburgh, NY, son of the late Edward J. and Dorothy Bebernitz Malone. In 1945 he graduated from Lansingburgh High, and attended Rutgers University while in the Army Reserve Specialized Training Program before entering the Army Signal Corps. After his honorable discharge in 1947 as a veteran of World War II, he worked in his father’s milk business and met his beloved wife of 67 years, Barbara McCormack Malone, who predeceased him in 2018.
In 1953, Larry and Barbara purchased a small farmstead, replete with fruit trees, ducks, chickens, and a large coop, in Averill Park, NY. Larry started his career with the New York Telephone Company in Albany, NY as a draftsman, and later transferred to the Eastern Area Building Planning Group in 1956, where he held the positions of Assistant Engineer, Engineer, and Supervising Engineer of Building Plans. His last major position with New York Tel was supervising the preparation of five buildings in White Plains, NY for the interim headquarters of the Nynex Corporation after the government-ordered breakup of the AT&T Corporation. In 1986 he accepted a position with Nynex Properties Company to supervise construction of a major operations center in the Rensselaer Technology Park. Following completion of that building, and after 35 years of telecommunications service, he retired to play golf, travel, have fun, and to spend countless hours enjoying life with his Barbara and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Larry was a graduate of Russell Sage Junior College. He was a member of the Albany Society of Engineers, the Telephone Pioneers, the Association of Bell Telephone Retirees Inc., the Troy Elks, the Sand Lake Seniors, and the Brookside Seniors Housing Board of Directors. Larry was most proud of his service with the Sand Lake Ambulance, and the Averill Park and Sand Lake Fire Department, where he served as President during the construction of the current firehouse building and was a Life Member.
Larry was predeceased by his brother Edward F. Malone, and sisters Dorothy Malone Cuerdon and Constance Malone La Posta. He is survived by his children Laurence J. (Eva Davidson), Robert E. (Kate Curtin), Patricia M. (Thomas Campbell) and Nancy A. (Arthur Ng). They are especially grateful to honorary sister Denise Pearson and the staff at the Falls for their loving care and companionship. Larry was tirelessly devoted to his family, and especially enjoyed seeing his grandchildren Luke and Theo Malone; Laura (Scott Sawyer), Susan (fiancée Shaun Aponik), Theresa (Thomas Romano) and Patrick Malone; Tosh, Cecilia, and Hugh Campbell; and Spencer and Taylor Ng become remarkable people. In recent years “GooGah” welcomed the first of what will one day be a gaggle of great grandchildren—Alexander, Christopher, and Ryan.
Larry will always be remembered for the range of his passions, quietly shared with Barbara, his children, and grandchildren. Those included the role of gentleman farmer, with 10 acres to tame and garden using chainsaws, axes, and his Farmall Cub tractor. His efforts to produce a jug or two of maple syrup were unsuccessful, but a hand operated antique apple press once yielded a full gallon of elderberry wine. Most importantly, Larry will be remembered for his love of family, his life-long dedication to Barbara, and his unfaltering encouragement of his children, grandchildren—and even their friends—which helped each of them enjoy the freedom, support, and confidence needed to chase their dreams and become more than they ever could have imagined.
Larry’s life will be celebrated with calling hours at Perry Komdat Funeral Chapel, 2691 NY 43, Averill Park, NY from 4-7 pm on Friday, October 21, 2022. After a 10:00 am service at the Chapel on Saturday, October 22, 2022, interment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to: Averill Park and Sand Lake Fire Company, PO Box 116 Averill Park, NY 12018.
