North Greenbush- Mark Alan “Stretch” Flanagan 76, of North Greenbush Road passed away on Monday June 30, 2025 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.

 Born in Lewiston, ME, Mark was a son of the late Richard E. Flanagan and Elizabeth Heck Flanagan. Mark was the father of the late Joseph Flanagan and brother of the late Timothy Flanagan. Mark grew up in Averill Park and was a 1967 graduate of the Averill Park High School. He had continued his education at Siena College.

Mark enlisted in the US Navy in 1968 and was honorably discharged in 1971 with the rank of Quartermaster 2nd Class. A highlight of his naval career was serving on the Admiral’s staff on the bridge of the USS Wasp Carrier during one of Mark’s 6 transatlantic voyages.

From 1978-1995 Mark worked for Albany Steel Co. concluding his career there as Plant Manager. Mark then worked in the Grounds Maintenance Departments of several local golf courses including the Burden Lake Golf Course along with Henderson Golf Club in Savannah, GA. He had also been a Class A cross country truck driver for Crete Carrier Co.

Marks’s passion in life was the game of golf. He played as often as he could and even worked part time at Rte. 4 driving range during his retirement years. He earned MVP honors on his high school golf team and was a single-digit handicap player for most of his life. His golf swing was as smooth as butter. One of his proudest accomplishments was “shooting his age” at the age of 71. His second favorite pastime was reading and his third favorite was teasing his family and friends just about everything, especially their vocabulary and grammar. Mark was a co-founder of the Glass Lake Men’s Golf League and was a Life member of the Burden Lake Golf Club.

Mark is survived by his loving children Rachel (Gerard) Flanagan of Johnson City, TN and Jeremy Flanagan of No. Greenbush, Mark was the second born in a family of 8 boys that was known locally as “Flanagan’s Boystown.” (No connection to the Omaha, NE Boystown). His brothers include Michael(Sharon), Matthew (Ginger), Richard (Lisa), Robert (Cindy), Patrick Mary) and Andrew (Cindy) He was Grampy to Christian, Cameron and Cayleigh McAleese and Skyler Flanagan along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
