Look Rensselaer- Michael William Hampton, 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a short illness.
Born and raised in the village of Hammondsport, NY, Michael was the son of the late Elmer and Geraldine Ryan Hampton and the beloved husband of Dianne Walsh-Hampton. Michael embodied an authenticity, integrity, loyalty, gift of gab, and love of people honed by his small-town upbringing on the shores of Keuka Lake.
Michael graduated from SUNY Albany and settled in the Capital District after college, and for the last 20 years resided with Dianne in their “home with a view” overlooking the Albany skyline and the best view of the 4th of July fireworks in the area. He spent his career as a certified public accountant before retiring from the N.Y. State Higher Education Department.
Michael was an avid tennis player and golfer belonging to area golf leagues and tennis clubs. He was also an ever present and passionate coach on his children’s softball and baseball teams, and Cub Scout Den Leader in the local Delmar chapter. Michael was a dedicated card and backgammon player, single-handedly responsible for elevating the game to a sacred family tradition with both his children and grandchildren. A penultimate tinkerer, Michael was an idea man of immense ingenuity and creativity.
In addition to his wife, Michael is survived by his daughter Patricia E. Hampton of Delmar, NY; his son Zachary M. (Wendy) Hampton of Telluride, CO; sister Jean Stanton of Richmond, VA; brother Donald (Ellie) Hampton of Bath, NY; granddaughters Breton and Zoe Hampton; grandson Jesse Hampton; and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. Michael was predeceased by his sister Ruth Palmer.
Michael’s family is most grateful to the staff of St. Peter’s Hospital for the impeccable care, compassion, and kindness they provided to Michael and his family.
