Sand Lake-Richard A. Hixon Sr., 83, died on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the Van Rensselaer Manor after a long illness (Parkinson’s disease). Born in Brooklyn, Richard was the son of the late George A. and Jennie Blood Hixon and the husband of Margeorie Botterill Hixon. Richard was a longtime teacher, having first taught in Uniondale, NY. Upon moving upstate in 1958, he began a 29-year teaching career at Castleton Elementary School in Schodack, retiring in 1987. Richard was a tuba player and played in the HMS Marching Band, the Capital District Marching Band, the Senior Citizens Orchestra of Albany, and the Averill Park Strings and Winds. Richard was a volunteer fire police officer with the Taborton Fire Co., and a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc. Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Richard A. Hixon Jr. of Rexford; his daughter Jennifer Hixon (Timothy Sergay) of East Greenbush; his daughter-in-law Jeanette Morales of Southport, NC; his brother Donald G. Hixon of Hudson, NY; his grandchildren Nicholas and Peter Sergay, Jana and Joseph Barone and Gia (Kevin) Park, several great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his dog Lucy. Relatives and friends may call at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park on Saturday October 24, 2015 1-3 p.m. with a brief service at 2:30p.m.The family would like to thank the caring friends and neighbors who helped Richard live at home after Margeorie’s stroke, the doctors at the Albany Med Movement Disorders Clinic, and the devoted and skilled staff who looked after him once he rejoined Margeorie at Van Rensselaer Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard A.
