Norfolk, VA - Richard (“Dick”) L. Tallman, Jr., 88, of Norfolk, VA, lost his battle with cancer, on Friday, June 18th at his residence. Born and raised in Herkimer, NY, Dick was the son of the late Richard L. and Doris King Tallman, Sr. Dick graduated from Herkimer High School, Class of 1950, He earned his BS degree from Oswego State Teachers’ College, Class of 1954 and was the goalie for the Oswego State Soccer Club. After graduating from college, Dick married the love of his life, Judy, in February 1955, and they remained married until her death just shy of 58 years, in November 2013. He received his MA from Albany State University and Arizona State University in 1971. The first house they owned was in Taborton, NY, where they lived for 12 years before they moved to their home on Edgewood Drive. From 1955 until 1988, Dick was a teacher in the Averill Park Central School District. He taught Industrial Arts, Drafting and Drivers’ Education. While teaching at the high school, he was also a soccer coach, starting the Averill Park Soccer Program in 1955, was a ski club advisor and the time keeper at all home basketball games. He also filmed all of the home football games. He was a class advisor to many senior classes, and chaperoned them on a senior trip to Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and others. Dick was a member of the Averill Park Teachers’ Association and served as president of that organization for many years and was fondly nicknamed “Ace”.
 Dick also made ice cream at Silberg’s Pharmacy in Averill Park. Each of his children, loved when it was their turn to accompany him one Saturday a month. He made the ice cream that was served at the ice cream parlor in the pharmacy.
 Dick served the Town of Sand Lake for 16 years, as a Zoning Officer, Councilman, and finally as Supervisor of the Town. In 1997, Dick and Judy sold their home on Edgewood Drive in Averill Park, NY, and moved to Lewes, DE. In 2007, they returned to Averill Park, and had a beautiful home built, overlooking Glass Lake. Two years after Judy’s death, Dick moved to Norfolk, VA and lived with his daughter, Terri. Dick enjoyed skiing, playing tennis, bike riding and working out in the gym. In 2016, he joined the Norfolk Senior Center in Ocean View, where he enjoyed playing billiards with his new friends. At the Norfolk Senior Olympics, he won the gold medal for billiards in his age group - two years in a row. He was a longtime communicant of St. Henry’s Church in Averill Park and attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Norfolk, VA.
 Survivors include his five children: Debra Tallman of RI; Theresa “Terri” Singer of Norfolk, VA; Ronald “Jake” (Brenda) Tallman of Brunswick, NY; Karen Anderson of Castle Rock, CO; and Michael Tallman of Wynantskill, NY. Dick is also survived by his very special friend, Gene Yancy King, who enriched his life these past 4 years.
 Dick is also survived by his grandchildren Jonathan (Lauren) Bashford of MA. and Kelly (Mike) Poissant of RI; Stephanie and Timothy Singer, both of Norfolk, VA; Chase (Erika) Anderson of San Antonio, TX.; Rachel Tallman of Corbett, OR, and Hannah Tallman of Las Vegas, NV. and his great grandchildren Sydney, Aurore and Ben Bashford, Beck and August Anderson. Dick was very proud of his 5 children, his 7 grandchildren, and his 5 great grandchildren. Dick was the brother of the late Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Riley and her late husband Jack.
Funeral 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 14 at St. Henry’s Church, 39 Old Rte 66, Averill Park, NY where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.
Relatives and friends are invited may also call at the CHURCH 5-7 pm on Monday, September 13.
