Troy—Shirley K. Speedy (Shelgren), a longtime resident of Troy and Averill Park, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness at the age of 91. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the St.Peter’s Hospice Inn team for the extraordinary care, compassion, and comfort they provided to Shirley and her family during her final days.
Born in Jewett, Ohio, Shirley was the daughter of the late Frederick Moore and Iris Myrtle Speedy. She graduated from Limestone High School in Limestone, New York in 1953. She attended business school, which eventually placed her at Sears & Roebuck in Olean, New York. She took the bus to work and thoroughly enjoyed her time working in the credit department. Shirley married John D. Shelgren in 1955 and became a homemaker. She and her family eventually moved to the Averill Park area in 1961 and after her children were of school age, Shirley started in the banking industry. She worked her way up from teller to bank manager. She was a loyal and dedicated associate during her working years. She started as a part time teller at The National Exchange Bank in Averill Park walking to work. She developed a wide knowledge of banking and branch procedures and was always a team player. Shirley was a highly respected leader and was often called on to stabilize struggling bank branch locations. She ended her career as the manager of the Bank of America in Averill Park and retired in 2004. Shirley was a member of the Church of the Covenant in Averill Park and enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and shopping.
While Shirley took great pride in her career, her greatest joy was her family. She devoted herself to raising her children and later took great pleasure in being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Shirley was the sister of the late Donald “Fred” Speedy, Gary Speedy, Dolores Hatch, Donna Hatch, and Mona Speedy.
Survivors include her children, John D. Shelgren Jr. of Asheville, NC, Jay D. and Jess Shelgren of Te Awamutu, New Zealand, James D. and Lori Ann Shelgren of Sebastian, FL, Juli D. Silva of Troy, Jerry D. and Yvonne Shelgren of Maryville, TN, and Joni D. and James Fasoldt of Averill Park; her brother, George W. And Dona Speedy of Ridgeway, SC; along with twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
