Poestenkill - Shirley A. Wachtel, 88, of Ott Street passed away peacefully on Friday March 8, 2024 at Samaritan Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Troy, Shirley was the daughter of the late Francis and Fannie Bitley Booth and the beloved wife of Peter C. Wachtel who died on March 21, 2024.
Raised in Center Brunswick, Shirley was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School. Shirley worked at International
Harvester for a number of years
before working and retiring from Siena College where she was an office
manager. She resided on Circle Drive in Poestenkill from 1968-1999. Shirley and Peter loved to dance in the Tamarac Twirlers Square Dance Club, where they laughed and enjoyed great times with their friends. In 1998 She and Peter became travelers throughout the country in their motorhome, where they followed the NASCAR circuit.
After that they became snowbirds traveling back and forth from East Poestenkill in the summer to Florida the rest of the year . When in Florida, She and Peter ran the campground kitchen in Homosassa.
For several years she was a member of the Palestine Star Chapter 167 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed snowmobiling, was a l passionate Jets fan, a serious NASCAR Fan and would look forward to being at the Daytona 500 every year. Some of her most joyful times were spent at family gatherings of holidays and clam steams.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her children Peter F. (Patricia) Wachtel and Charles J. (Jami) Wachtel both of Poestenkill, Deborah (John) Gilday of Nashua, NH and Dawn A. Wachtel of Poestenkill, 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Shirley was the sister of the late Marion Morse and Eleanor Stannard.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call 10-12 noon on Saturday April 13, 2024 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park followed by a short service and Inurnment in St. Henry’s Cemetery Averill Park.
If desired the family request donations in memory of Peter and Shirley may be made to the Community Hospice Gift Processing Center 310 So. Manning Blvd. Albany, NY 12208 or the Rensselaer County Dept. of Aging Home delivered Meals Program 99 Troy Road East Greenbush, NY 12061.
