Sand Lake- Thelma I. Culver, 70, of Taborton Road died on Monday, May 19, 2014 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn after a short illness with her husband at her side. Born in Troy, Thelma was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice Budesheim Teal and the wife of 52 years to Harry W. “Bear” Culver. Thelma was a lifelong resident of Sand Lake and a 1961 graduate of the Averill Park High School. Thelma went to work for the Averill Park School District in July 1962 and retired 37 1/2 years later. She worked in various positions in the School District Offices and then as a secretary for the Algonquin Middle School Guidance Department. Thelma was a lifelong member of the Zion’s United Church of Christ and served on several committees and was a member of the Board as well as the Church Clerk and Church Historian. She worked at the raffle booths for the annual Summer Festival, Holiday Bazaar, and worked in the kitchen area for the church’s different dinners and was a member of the Secret Pal Club. Thelma was a past member of the Black River Raiders snowmobile club where she served as secretary and treasurer. Year’s ago; Thelma enjoyed going to the races at the Lebanon Valley Speedway and other dirt circuit tracks. She was an avid Dale Earnhardt Sr. & Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan and was happy to have been able to see live races at Daytona and Bristol. Thelma also enjoyed going to theater shows at Mac-Haydn, the Theater Barn, Proctors, and Sand Lake Center for the Arts. Thelma was a member of the Albany Area Educational Secretaries Group.  Thelma would always remember those special occasions for friends and family and enjoyed making up little poems for those events. She would seek the help of her fiend Shirley when she needed the “just right” wording if she had trouble finding the right words. Among her family and friends Thelma was known for her chocolate chip cookies and her carrot cake. Survivor’s in addition to her husband include her brother Kenneth (Bette) Teal of Sand Lake, her sister-in-law Elsie Rathbun, her nieces Barbara (Glenn) Dean and Virginia Seburn (Ginger), her nephews John (Lynn) Teal, Kevin Miller Sr., and several great nieces and nephews, and Nicole Simiele her god daughter. Funeral Service Wednesday, May 28, 2014, 10 a.m. at the Zion’s United Church of Christ, 741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, 4 to 8 p.m. Thelma requests donations in her memory be made to Zion’s United Church of Christ Memorial Fund 741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, N.Y. Visit perrykomdat.com for directions and private guestbook.
