West Sand Lake- Thomas B. Groat, 86, of Barnes Road died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. Born and raised in Albany, Tom was the son of the late Belden F. and Mary D. Coughlin Groat and husband of June Dawson Groat. Tom served in the US Navy from 1950 – 1954. He joined Electrical Union 236 working on many area projects until his retirement. He and June had resided in West Sand Lake for 55 years where he also ran his hobby farm Broken New Farm. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and he was a former member of the Empire Beagle Club.
Survivors in addition to his wife of 58 years include his daughters Laura (Jack) Schreiner of West Sand Lake, Karen (Paul) Stickney of Portland, ME and Kristina (Edward) 
Fausel of Charlotte, NC, sister Barbara Lutey of Ohio, brother Donald Groat of No. Carolina, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Tom was the brother of the late Shirley Ryan.
Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation with Tom’s family 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake Averill Park.
