Sand Lake- Arthur G. “Fergie” Ferguson, 90, of Rte 43, died on Monday, January 21, 2019 surrounded by his family at his home after a brief illness. Born in Troy, Fergie was the son of the late Glenn A. and Ella Shaver Ferguson and the devoted husband for 40 years to Marilyn Daus Ferguson. Fergie grew up in North Greenbush on the family farm and was a member of the Defreestville Fire Co. for six years. Fergie Joined the Army in 1951 and served until 1954 when he returned to Defreestville before moving to Averill Park in 1956. Fergie worked for the Averill Park School District for 33 years where he was a custodian. Most of those years were spent at the High School and he retired in 1991.
Fergie was a longtime devoted member of the Averill Park-Sand Lake Fire Company. He joined on April 2, 1957 and became a Life Member on June 2,1979. Fergie served as Chief from 1966 to 1972 and again in 1982 and 1983. He was a Past Commissioner serving on the Board of Commissioners. Art was a Charter member of the Sand Lake Ambulance, a former Deputy County Fire Coordinator, former member of the County Fire Advisory Board and a former member of the County Fire Chiefs Association. Fergie enjoyed vacationing in New Hampshire and Maine and taking cruises.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his children Charlie (Gina) Ferguson, Nancy McGrath, Sandy (Eric) Berger, Wayne (Diane) King, Michael King, Paul (Karen) King, Kevin King, Vicki (Bill) Barbour, David King, Theresa (Anthony) Deso and Tedi (Toby) Adair. Art was the father of the late Glenn A. Ferguson and JoAnne M. King. He was also survived by many grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Funeral 10 a.m. Friday, January 25 at the Averill Park Fire House 35 Eastern Turnpike, Averill Park with burial to follow at Memory Gardens, Colonie, NY.
Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the FIREHOUSE 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 24.
The family request donations in memory of Arthur G. Ferguson be made to the Averill Park – Sand Lake Fire Co. PO Box 116 Averill Park, NY 12018.
